In order to witness that Jesus Christ was truly the Messiah, the Savior whom all the people of Israel had been waiting for, John the Baptist gave people the baptism of repentance, and he also baptized Jesus at the Jordan River. After giving the baptism to Jesus, he also testified that Jesus is the Son of God, saying, “I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God” (John 1:33-34).
